The name os 'AZULEJO'.
The pronunciation is :
Azoo-LAY-ju.
'Az' like the English word 'as';
'LAY' like the English 'play'
'ju' like English 'do'
The last syllable is pronounced like the French jardin, or the 's' in the English 'pleasure' or 'vision'.
Plural ends in an 's', so the word is then pronunced 'Az-oo-LAY-jush'.
E lá está!

Wow!!! When you were talking about tiles, I had no idea!!! Unbelievable!
Wow, this is.... Fantastic. Mindboggling... and a little maddening that some left their unwanted marks on them. THANK YOU, Now-Here Man.

Stewart,
Great set of tiles. I was also planning to post a panel of tiles but you and Nuno (http://portodailyphoto.blogspot.com/2006/07/santo-ildefonso-church.html) aren't making things easy for me.
Joana,
Your link has great panels, particularly some from Porto.
Desculpe a intromissão, mas conheco o seu blog a partir da Papalagui...
Belas fotos e belos azulejos! E Portugal é tão ricos em paineis de azulejos, pena nem sempre haver vontade superior de os conservar e mostrar; seriam um belo tema turístico.
I think it is one of the clearest examples of mindless juvenile stupidy to graffiti azelejos & statues. Of course it is criminal. But I wanted to show that on the steps up to rua Miguel Lupi, near the Assembleia da República. The cat made it!
Carlos, shame on you!! Não há motivo nenhúm para deixar de tirar nem azulejos (tema idéal) nem seja que for. Va-lá, TIRES!!! I want to see them...SOON!
Teimosita (I love that ID name!), sejas muito bem vindo e não aceito desculpas nenhumas, para qué? concordo, é o azulejo constitue talvez a riqueza e patrimonio mais visível do país. As autoridades devem pelo menos descubrir e castigar bem forte os "graffiti artists" (sic)(& sick). Não encontrei o teu blog....Não existe o que?
PS- as much as I like the word 'stupidy' (I will campaign to have the Oxford English Dictionary include it in future editions), I did intend to write 'stupidity', but was too excited with my new superfast, supersensitive keyboard/teclado!
Some of them are familiar to me, love azulejos, painting them is one of my hobbies.
