25 de Abril 1974-2007+++...Portugal's Carnation Revolution Day

It's getting to be a very long time ago.
Nevertheless, for a very large proportion of the population, the red carnation lives on as a symbol of something immeasurably valuable and worthwhile, even if the memory fades.

It won't be the same not to be at the parade this year.
In this life, all things must pass. Eventually.

Quando chegaremos ao 26 de Abril?
Talvez quando varrermos todos estes filhos do 25...

Descobri-o através das imagens do 25 de Abril. Pesquisa no google.

Well, well....Gosto muito do teu conceito dos filhos do 25. You can overthrow a dictatorship overnight; evolving a system with education that manages to sweep away the attitudes and behaviour that the dictatorship & 500 years of preceding history engendered deeply (leading, of course, to the dictatorship itself!) is a very differenty matter. The roots are so deep in the society and the post-25 de Abril failed in so many ways. Perhaps with the help of the EC, in my humble opinion.

Mmmm... a post on the 25th of April... only one comment so far... coincidence? Or is everyone shopping at the centros comerciais, since it's raining? I don't know, and I agree with your comment on the EC's role regarding the following years (but we should not forget that the EC is us as well, and that many choices were ours). Anyway, I do know I like your post and your pictures. Have a great holiday!

I read that the soldiers were convinced to swap their bullets for red carnations during the revolution...

I like the images you prepared for this ocassion but i cant say i like the thought of watching these people still making a fool of themselves of what the 25th of April brought to their lives!
So much questions in my mind regarding their democracy...did their lives improved? are they much happier now than before democracy? i hear only bitterness, critism about the past when i talk to people ..Why cant they forgive & forget about the past and look ahead for a better future ? I came to love Portugal as my 2nd country.. but there is a negative side that im beginning to dislike.
Thanks for sharing us your photos & blog!

Hello Aura. Which country are you from? You live here now? How long?
I think that all of us here could discuss all of these questions & observations for the rest of our lives, so much to say & think about. Sometimes, or often, the 'outsiders' os estrangeiros can see realities clearly than the natives, because of the differences from what we know. I discuss it all so much, I observe it all and it is very frustrating, because in the end, we can't change anything. There is much deep culture and history involved that makes a people the way it is.
I hope you click on the link of Pedro above & read what he wrote. He sees a lot of truths about his country clearly. Very sadly, the people are too good at complaining, criticising, but not realising just how responsible every person is for what happens, how it develops - individually and colectively. So it is like an eternal waiting for a new Super-Leader to solve all the problems. Waiting, waiting, waiting, talking, complaining. it is the result of 48 years of dictatorship, 500 + years of ignorance and mediocrity and 33 years of wasted time and money. Since the late-1970s those clever enough in politics & business have acted only in their own interest, misusing EU funds etc, with too few notable exceptions. An economy that jumped from primary (agriculture) straight to tertiary (services), with almost no secondary (manufacturing, production). They missed that train, thanks to Salazar. Too many small people in charge. He was a very small man. But he is chosen as the Grande Português. What does thay say?
Audrey, the carnation story is romantic, but the origins are mythical. However, what is true is that the people ended up throwing carnations at the soldiers, who wore them in their gun muzzles. It was a beautiful time, for a while, but it didn't work, when you look at what passes for systems, organisation, production, productivity, democracy, today. Sad.
So, aura, what is it that you dislike?

Hi Stewart,
I was taking a look at the Salgueiro Maio biography I bought 12 years ago and just by watching some of the pictures of that day it gave me creeps. I don't think Salgueiro Maia would like this Portugal.

Hey Carlos!
You know what? I think you are right. I guess he'd be very disillusioned. but then, he wasn't a "Grande Português" either. Come to think of it, SM would never be able to comprehend how that could happen to Salazar in 2007.

Bonsoir à tous et à toutes at the end of May Day.
Re. health/santé, doing my best, but it is not how it should/could be. That is why I have become so quiet. Never mind, there's worse to worry about.
A new post is ready but my eyes are, once again, right at their limit and it will have to wait till tomorrow. Last night the cable TV & internet had a major cut, just as I was finishing the text on my dashboard. All lost. No use crying....I wrote it out and saved it & it will appear tomorrow.
Night night all.
