Custard tart - I've been after a good one for a llooooonnnnggg time but found none and I don't eat so-so ones. I might have to go to Wellington for a good one - I know a place..... The top shot - is it embroidery? A scarf? A belt? And.... New Century leg warmers?

Non seulement elle travaillait dur à l'extérieur, mais elle élève d'une main de fer ses trois filles, elle a une maison impeccable à tout moment de la journée, elle fait super bien la cuisine et en plus, elle est coquette, belle comme un coeur et elle chérit son mari !!!
Elle donnait vraiment, elle aussi, une belle image du Portugal

I wasn't expecting to see you back so soo, but I'm glad about it!
The top picture is very familiar to mee. Actually, I have a watercolour of these pauliteiros dancers somewhere - not very proud about it, but maybe I'll post it on my blog during the weekend for you, milestones!
The pauliteiros are folklore groups (just men), who dress skirts, decorated with colourful scarves and perform a warrior dance, in which they "fight" with sticks. Apparently, they originated in real ancient warrior dances (some say as old as the Greeks, other just go back to medieval times), the skirts having replaced the tunics, the scarves representing the shields - harder to buy this one, but anyway... a real beautiful thing to watch!

Mile, I just discovered your blog from Ruth's...love it and love your pictures. We've been to Portugal 3 times and we love it. Lisbon is one of our favorite cities. I love the fado music - we like to go to the fado places in the Alfama, which are not quite as touristy as the ones in Bairro Alto although they are all great. What is your favorite fado house? We are always looking for new ones.

Just one correction, the Pauliteiros are not from Mirandela, they are from Miranda do Douro (I don't know how Pequete missed it). It´s a bit further east, right on the border with Spain. Nice detail.

Seriously, great to know you are lusophiles. Spread the word! I'd like to answer you in more detail re. fado houses, but not here. You see, I've had the opportunity to see a little 'back-stage'in Alfama (daytime), talk to people involved. Thet tourists are naturally very important, particularly to the places that do dinner/fado inclusive. It seems that the more tucked away/the tinier the Alfama street/the harder to find, the better. Very often the best singers only appear in the small hours, after most tourists are back in their hotels. Club do Fado, you know it? And Bairro Alto - no, rip-off! Do you know some of the more famous new generation, like Mariza & my favourite Cristina Branco (who is not a classic fadista, but superb). And Camané, of the male singers? Now, I want to do a fado post!!! Please come again! Any friend of Ruth's is a friend of mine!

Thank you, Pequete. So... this is like the Portuguese Haka - after they stopped fighting and started just dancing, the shield probably got too heavy, or someone had a wee cut from the war and his mate just wrapped a scarf for him, though what he was doing with a scarf just then, I'm not sure.
I love the embroidery on the clothes .. really nice .. what were they wearing as in was it the national dress?
